Milk and Dates: A perfect Ramadan drink
Ramadan is one of the holiest months of the year in the Islamic tradition. Muslims from all across the world observe rigorous fasts and celebrate the month of Ramadan with full fervor. It involves refraining from eating or drinking during the day time hours. The basic idea behind this is to inculcate a sense of self restraint. Two special meals a day are allowed -one before the sunrise (Suhoor or Sehri), and one as the sun sets, when people break their fasts with a meal called ‘Iftar’.
After the sunset call of Maghrib prayer, Muslim break their fast by having dates and milk. They begin their Iftar by consuming dried dates that have been soaked overnight in milk, in adherence to the teachings of Prophet Mohammad, who, it is believed, broke his fast in a similar way. While a plain glass of milk with dates is the traditional Ramadan drink, you can also try your hand at spicing things up with mouth-watering dishes with stuffed dates.
Ramadan has fallen in summers this season, and abstaining from food and drinks throughout the day may cause your body to lose liquids and lead to dehydration. The customary dates and milk is the best way to avoid dehydration in an effective manner. Even otherwise, it is a delicious drink to have whenever you crave for something that is sweet and healthy.
